 Mohandas Gandhi was first called Mahatma, or Great soul, by the poet Tagore. The name was taken up by his admirers but Gandhi himself did not like it .he had no wish for honors or titles. It is difficult, though, to describe this man- one of the very great men of our times- in any others terms.
 No man played a larger part in India’s struggle for political independence. Yet the word “ political” did not suit. He looked for neither power nor high place. He cared nothing for wealth, fame or comfor, but his people’s happiness above all. People of different faiths came to sit at his feet and learned from him. And his teachings have touched the hearts of people in many nations.
