Period :88 (11/4/09) Lesson 5: LANGUAGE FOCUS Aims: By the end of the lesson, ss will be able to: -Distinguish the sounds /g/ & /k/ and pronounce the words and sentences containing these sounds correctly. -Use structures with “will” and “going to”. Aids: Textbook PROCEDURE I/ Warmer:(3') -T asks ss to give the Vietnamese meaning of this sentence and then read it aloud. This is the biggest cup I’ve ever seen. -Lead-in: Today we will practice the two sounds /g/ & /k/. II/ Pronunciation:(8') 1/ Presentation: /g/: the sound /g/ can stand at the beginning, in the middle or at the end of the word. Eg: go, begin, beg... /k/: the sound /k/ can stand at the beginning or at the end of the word. Eg: keep, jacket, week... -All the words containing the letter “k” are pronounced /k/. -The letter “c” standing before a,o,u is always pronounced /k/. Eg: cup, because, come... -The letter “k”standing before the letter “n” is not pronounced. Eg: knit/nit/, know/n u/... 2/ Practce: a/ Listen and repeat: -Have ss listen and repeat the words in the book -T calls on some ss to read the words aloud. -T checks and corrects if necessary. b/ Pick out the words containing the sounds /g/ and /k/. -Have ss practice reading the sentences and picking out the words containing the sounds /k/ and /g/. -T checks and gives correct answers. III/ Grammar: 1.Will vs. going to:(6') a/ Presentation: T gives some examples: A: I’m going to buy Lan a CD for her birthday. B: A CD ? But she hasn’t got a CD player. A: Oh, I’ll buy her a record then. -T elicits from ss the differences between will and going to when talk about future intentions. * Notes: 1/ Will: -Form: (+): S + will + V (-) : S + will not(won’t) + V (?) : Will + S + V ? -Meaning : Future - Use: will is used to express a future intention or decision made at the moment of speaking. 2/ Going to: -Form: (+) : S + am/is/are + going to + V (-) : S + am/is/are + not + going to + V (?) : Am/Is/Are + S + going to +V? -Meaning: Future -Use : going to is used to express a future intention or decision thought before the moment of speaking. b/ Practice:(7') -Have ss do exercise 1 individually, then compare with their partners. -T calls on some ss to present and explain their answers. -T gives feedback. *Answer: 1.I’ll get 5.I’ll show 2.I’m going to wash 6.I’ll have 3.Are you going to paint 7.I’ll do 4.I’m going to buy c/ Production: (5')(group work) T introduces a situation: Your class has decided to have a party.Everyone must help to prepare for it.Say what you will do.Then report to the tacher your plans. -Have ss work in group of 2 tables and work out what they will do to help prepare for the party. Ss need to use will.Eg: S1: I’ll buy some flowers. S2: I’ll buy some fruits and cakes. -T goes around to observe and offer help if necessary. -Then have ss report what each member of their group plans to do.This time ss need to use going to. Eg: I’m going to buy some flowers. And Mai is going to buy some fruits and cakes. -T gives feedback. 2.Will: making predictions or offers:(7) a/ Presentation: T gives some examples: -I think it will rain today, so take your raincoat just in case. -A: This suitcase is too heavy. B: I’ll carry it for you. -Have ss compare the two example and explain. -T gives feedback and provide further explanation if necessary. * Notes: When will is used to make a prediction, the speaker doesn’t have outside evidence for what he/she says.He/She just says what he/she believes or knows.(example 1) When will is used to make an offer,it is used in contracted form “ll”.(example 2) b/ Practice:(6') -Have ss do exercise 2 and 3 individually, then compare with their partners. -T calls on some ss to read out their answers and gives feedback. c/ Production:(5') Making predictions about World Cup 2010, using these cues: -The winner of W.C 2010: -The runner-up: -The score of the final match: -The Golden Ball awardee (for the best player): -The best goalkeeper: V/ Homework:(2') Review the use of will and going to.
