In the late 1900s people began to look for different, or alternative, sources of energy to power their vehicles, heat their homes and light streets and building. They worried that the traditional sources of energy, such as fossil fuels and nuclear power, were using up natural resources ansd harming the natural environment. Alternative energy sources include solar power, wind power and wave action.
Fossil fuels, such as oil, coal and natural gas, are available on Earth only in limited supplies, and they will run out one day . Fossil fuels also add carbon dioxide to the atmosphere when they are burnt. Many people believe that this contributes to such problems as global warming and climate change. Burning fossil fuels also adds other pollutants, such as carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide, to the atmosphere. Nuclear power is regarded as a cleaner source of energy than fossil fuels, but it also has its problems. When energy has been released from nuclear fuel, dangerous radioactive waste is produced.
For hundreds of years people and industries have relied on fossil fuels. Changing to alternative energies is expensive and requires big changes to the systems that are already in place.
