Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions
The industrial revolution was quickly followed by advances in agriculture which resulted in the rapid death of this new underclass of dirt farmers. Just as they had been displaced by machines in factories, they fell victim to the advances in agriculture. By 1910, most of the arable land in the United States had been settled and, due to the anticipation of conservationists, methods for prevention of soil erosion began to be implemented. In 1914, the Smith-Lever Act provided funding for educators to instruct farmers in farm management. As a result of European postwar poverty and US overproduction, however, farmers experienced a depression lasting from 1920 to 1922. Nevertheless, Clarence Birdseye perfected a method for freezing foods which spurred farmers to diversify and produce crops which were previously too perishable to be of commercial value. Then, in the early 1930s, droughts, and dust storms caused by poor farming practices, devastated farms and ranches of the Great Plains. Franklin D Roosevelt's New Deal sought to satisfy the demands of striking farmers by a series of acts. For instance, The Agricultural Marketing Act improved prices for producers of perishables and allowed the federal government to buy surpluses, which were donated to the poor and used in school-lunch and food-stamp programs. By 1945 the prospects for farmers were bright but then wholesalers and distributors organized themselves into a network known as Agribusiness which grew to dominate the industry. It held a basic monopoly of outlets and, by putting farmers under annual contracts rather than buying available merchandise, meant that by the 1960s farmers required a huge amount of money to survive.

Bees, classified into over 10,000 species, are insects found in almost every part of the world except the northernmost and southernmost regions. One commonly known species is the honeybee, the only bee that produces honey and wax. Humans use the wax in making candles, lipsticks, and other products, and they use the honey as a substance that people eat to maintain life and growth. While gathering the nectar and pollen with which they make honey, bees are concurrently helping to fertilize the flowers on which they land. Many fruits and vegetables would not survive if bees did not carry the pollen from the blossom to blossom.
Bees live in a structured environment and social structure within a hive, which is a net with storage space for the honey. The diffferent types of bees each perform a distinct function. The worker bee carries nectar to hive in a special stomach called a honey stomach. Other workers make beeswax and shape it into a honeycomb, which is a water-proof mass of six-sided compartments, or cells. The queen lay eggs in completed cells. As the workers buid more cells, the queen lay more eggs.
All workers, like the queen, are female, but the workers are smaller than the queen. The male honeybees are called drones; they do no work and cannot sting. They are developed from unfertilized eggs, and their only job is to impregnate a queen. The queen must be fertilized in order to lay worker eggs. During the season when less honey is available and the drone is of no further use, the workers block the drones from eating the honey so that they will starve to death.
