While you may not think it at first, there are numerous cultural differences between the US and the UK that
you will likely encounter.
In general, Americans are much more open than Britons. Friends and even acquaintances discuss personal
thoughts and opinions that might seem private in the UK. Do not feel embarrassed if an American asks you a
seemingly private question. He or she is most likely sincerely curious about your thoughts and feelings and is
assuming you would like to share them.
You may learn more about your American friends than you wanted to know, or you may hear more childhood
stories than you care to listen to. Americans will be interested in your experiences and background as well since
your upbringing may differ greatly from theirs. In addition to more frequent discussion about their personal lives,
there is often a greater display of photographs, and posters in dorm rooms or office spaces.
The sense of humor differs from one side of the Atlantic to the other. Americans tend to be less dry or
sarcastic. Some Americans may feel offended if they do not understand your humor, but after a brief explanation
they will be laughing along with you.
Americans tend to believe that individuals control their circumstances by how much they work. This work
ethic is reflected in American attitudes towards academics. Don’t be surprised if you meet students who spend a
vast majority of their free time studying in the library.
Americans also tend to care much more for punctuality than their UK counterparts. Everything from classes to
a lunch date is expected to start right on time. Along with punctuality, most Americans move at a faster pace than
that in the UK. For example, dinners at a restaurant, even a sit-down restaurant, can be finished in under a half-
hour. Additionally, you will not have to ask for the bill. It will be brought to you as soon as it is clear to your
waiter or waitress that you are finished ordering more items.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on the answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions from 43 to 50.
Global warming and cooling have occurred naturally throughout history. But in the last 200 years, humans’
uses of fossil fuels and clear cutting of forests have increased the amount of carbon dioxide and other gases in the
atmosphere. These gases trap some of the radiation from the sun which then increases the Earth’s temperature.
Given the current state of environmental pollution caused by human activities, scientists believe the average
temperature of the earth may increase 1-2 degree Celsius, which means some places will get much hotter and
some much colder. At the same time, this overall warming effect means more frequent and more intense weather
systems, especially in terms of flooding and droughts.
Viet Nam is one of the most vulnerable environments due to its location on the planet. It is already subject
to some of the earth’s most powerful weather systems and the increased frequency and intensity of storms will
affect it often and directly, especially in coastal areas where most people live.
Various estimates have been made as to the possible impacts. The most directly affected sector will be
agriculture, which is very sensitive to flooding and the effects of extreme weather.
Viet Nam has the advantage of coming relatively late into the industrialization, urbanization, and mordernization
process. This means it can avoid many of the mistakes made by wealthier industrial countries. For example, wireless
communication networks can be built from the start rather than installing lines that can easily be destroyed in extreme
weather. Cities can be designed and located in less vulnerable locations. Climate-friendly building codes and standards
can be created that are both more efficient and less prone to heat stress, wind damage, and flooding. Climate-friendly
transport systems, especially public transport can be adopted.
Question 43: According to the passage, the causes of global warming come from ______.
A. human activities that result in pollution B. the difference in temperatures among regions
C. the rise in the radiation from the sun D. the increase in the average temperature of the earth
Question 44: Which of the following may NOT result in global warming?
A. the increasing greenhouse gas emissions B. human’s uses of fossil fuels
C. clear cutting of forests D. more intense weather system
Question 45: The word “which” in paragraph 1 refers to ______.
A. the gases B. the radiation C. the temperature D. the sun
Question 46: The word “intense” as used in paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to ______.
A. unchangeable B. extreme C. unpredictable D. slight
Question 47: Coastal areas in Viet Nam are often and directly affected by ______.
A. its vulnerable location on the planet B. storms with increased frequency and power
C. subject to the earth’s most powerful weather systems D. the overpopulation in coastal areas
Question 48: What is the main focus of the passage?
A. Global warming and economic development. B. Global warming and public health in Viet Nam.
C. Global warming in Viet Nam. D. Global warming on a global scale.
Question 49: In preparing for climate change, Viet Nam should take all of the following measures EXCEPT ______.
A. adopting public transport systems
B. coming late into the modernization process
C. setting climate-friendly building codes and standards
D. developing wireless communication networks
