Free Stress Seminar
Stress is with us all the time. It comes from mental or emotional activity as well as physical activity. It is unique and personal to each of us. In fact, what may be relaxing to one person may be stressful to another. For example, if you are a busy executive who likes to keep occupied all of the time, “taking it easy” at the beach on a beautiful day may be extremely frustrating, nonproductive, and upsetting. You may be emotionally distressed from “doing nothing”. Too much emotional stress can cause physical illnesses such as high blood pressure, ulcers, or even heart diseases. Physical stress from work or exercise is not likely to cause such ailments. The truth is that physical exercises can help you to relax and to better handle your mental or emotional stress.
Which of the following would be a determinant as to what people find stressful?
	A. Personality	B. Education	C. Marital status	D. Shoe size
Stress is _______.
	A. optional	B. relaxing	C. manageable	D. the same for all people
A source of stress NOT specifically mentioned in this passage is _______.
	A. educational activity	C. mental activity
	B. physical activity	D. emotional activity
Physical problems caused by emotional stress can appear as all of the following EXCEPT_______.
	A. ulcers	B. heart diseases	C. pregnancy	D. high blood pressure
One method mentioned to help handle stress is _______.
	A. physical exercise	B. tranquilizers	C. drugs	D. taking it easy
Activity 2: Read the following story and choose the most suitable heading from the list A-H for each part (1-6) of the article. There is one extra heading which you do not need to use. There is an example at the beginning. (1.2 points)
What was this final figure?
Hadn’t the bank noticed by this time?
Would you do the same again?
Were they pleased at your honesty?
Were you surprised they did nothing?
How much was in there?
Was that the end of the story?
What happened next?
I am a typical student, struggling on a part-time job at Woolworth’s. It was two weeks before my next statement was due to be sent out from the bank. I was checking my balance at the cashpoint machine, just in case my wages had already been paid in. Then up came all these zeros. My first reaction was panic- I thought it was an overdraft – although I soon realized my account was actually in credit by a massive amount.
0
 F
The balance the first time was Ê34,000. As I stood there staring at the screen, visions of touring Australia flashed through my mind. But I knew it wasn’t mine so I went into the bank and told them they had made a mistake.
1
I thought they would be, but they just sat me in a corner and ignored me for half an hour. They took it back in the end, explaining it was from another bank. One number was keyed wrongly so the money ended up in my account.
2
Two weeks later I again checked my balance, so as to be sure they’d stored it out. Up popped Ê500,000! I felt like a lottery winner, though without the ticket. When I told the bank this time, they said that because their computers were down I would have to leave it with them. I did, but within the week, the sum had doubled!
3
Over a million! I was falling about laughing at the cashpoint; the people behind me must have thought I was on drugs or something. It was brilliant looking down at those figures and imagining it was really mine.
4
Apparently not. Since my boyfriend, John, works for another bank, he knows how banks operate. He couldn’t believe what had happened. After a few weeks, my friends started saying I should move the money abroad and take off? Even my dad, who’s a retired policeman, said I should start withdrawing Ê300 a day – that’s the interest, so I wouldn’t have been touching the capital.
5
I was, and annoyed as well. I gave up on my local branch and contacted head office, in order to sort it out once and for all. But in spite of phoning them numerous times, it still took a while before anyone would deal with the matter. And even then, their attitude was amazing. They seemed very ungrateful considering all the hassle they caused me.
6
Not quite! The day after the 1Êm was finally debited from my account, Ê300 appeared. It was part of the interest earned. I know Ê300 isn’t a fortune to some people but for me it was a lot. I did tell the bank about it but eventually they said I could keep it. I’m spending it on a trip to Turkey.
Activity 3: Read the article. Seven sentences have been removed from the text. Choose from sentences A-H the one which best fits each gap (1-6). There is one extra sentence which you do not need to use. There is an example (0) at the beginning. (1.8 points)
How to survive the cold
 (0) ____________ It seems that the popularity of outdoor sports is growing. Britons are taking to the hills in increasing numbers in their free time, perhaps influenced by the growing interest in the environment. The fact that there are more and more of these shops is evidence of this trend. Going for a walk in the mountains of Scotland may seem a safe and gentle way to spend your time (the highest peak is just over 1.300 m).
Some time this winter, you can be sure that you will see it on the news: "Hope is fading for a missing climber". (1) _________ Somewhere, in some frozen corner of Scotland, a mountain rescue team is looking for someone - and they know, the chances are, it's already too late. (2) ______________
On 4 January last year it was Richard Antrim, a computer programmer from Newcastle, who did not return to his car after a walking weekend. Weather conditions were terrible and the search team trying to rescue him feared the worst. However three days later, Antrim walked into the ski resort of Glensee.
Trapped by strong winds and deep snow, Antrim had made a hole in the snow and crawled into a survival bag. The next day, he walked two kilometres before digging another hole. (3) ____________ He celebrated his survival in British style with a hot cup of tea. But his story is unusual.
(4) _______________ The blood gets thicker as it loses water, limiting the body's ability to keep warm, so it's important to drink a lot. You also need to keep up your body temperature by eating high-energy food like chocolate and Antrim was lucky because he had some available. He also had a kettle which meant he could boil water.
Protecting yourself against the cold will also be a key to survival. The wind can lower temperatures by more than 20oC so wind- and water-proof clothing is essential. (5) _______________
	 (6) _______________ But however well-prepared you are what you need more than anything else is a lot of luck. If it's your lucky day, the weather and visibility will improve and you will have a little chance of avoiding unseen dangers and finding your way home. But if conditions get worse you could find yourself in a very dangerous situation.
A. Because of this, cotton T-shirts are not a particular good idea.
B. But each year, hundreds of people get into trouble and the reason is always the same.
C. Everybody knows what it means.
D. He repeated this until he reached the village.
E. How had he managed to get down off the mountain?
F. If you visit almost any town in Britain, you will be struck by the number of shops selling outdoor equipment.
G. The greatest threat to your survival comes from hypothermia.
H. Underneath this you need at least two layers of clothing that do not absorb water.

Activity 4: Read the passage and answer the questions that follow. (2.0 points)
Lighthouses are towers with strong lights that help mariners plot their position, inform them that land is near, and warn them of dangerous rocks and reefs. They are placed at prominent points on the coast and on islands, reefs, and sandbars.
Every lighthouse has a distinctive pattern of light known as its characteristic. There are five basic characteristics: fixed, flashing, occulting, group flashing, and group occulting. A fixed signal is a steady beam. A flashing signal has periods of darkness longer than periods of light, while an occulting signal’s periods of light are longer. A group- flashing light gives off two or more flashes at regular intervals, and a group – occulting signal consists of a fixed light with two or more periods of darkness at regular intervals. Some lighthouses use lights of different colours as well, and today, most lighthouses are also equipped with radio beacons. The three types of apparatus used to produce the signals are the catoptric, in which metal is used to reflect the light; the dioptric, in which glass is used; and the catadioptric, in which both glass and metal are used.
In the daytime, lighthouses can usually be identified by their structure alone. The most typical structure is a tower tapering at the top, but some, such as the Bastion Lighthouse on the Saint Lawrence River, are shaped like pyramids, and others, such as the Race Rock light, look like wooden houses sitting on high platforms. Still others, such as The American Shoal lighthouse off the Florida Coast, are skeletal towers of steel. Where lighthouses might be confused in daylight, they can be distinguished by day- marker patterns – designed of checks and stripes painted in vivid colors on lighthouse walls.
In the past, the job of lighthouse keeper was lonely and difficult, if somewhat romantic. Lighthouse keepers put in hours of tedious work maintaining the lights. Today, lighthouses are almost entirely automated with humans supplying only occasional maintenance. Because of improvements in navigational technology, the importance of lighthouses has diminished. There are only about 340 functioning lighthouses in existence in the United States today, compared to about 1,500 in 1900, and there are only about 1,400 functioning lighthouses outside the United States. Some decommissioned lighthouses have been preserved as historical monument.
