LESSON PLAN
UNIT 10: COMMUNICATION 
Lesson 1: Getting stared 
My battery was flat 
I. Class description:
26 boys, 13 girls. All Vietnamese. They are all students and they get on well together as a class.
Most of them had actually studied some English at primary schools.
II. Objectives: 
 By the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
Use lexical items related to topic " Communication" as: using social media, emailing, video chatting, using telepathy, sending letters( snail mail), meeting face-to- face, having a video conference,...
 Understand meaning of the words or phrases as: show up, never mind, oversleep, waiting for ages, get through, “My battery was flat", “Are you kidding?”, "We can try again"
Listen, understand and practice conversation between Phuc and Nick about topic "My battery was flat"
Know these nouns can be used as verbs such as: email => to email/ emailing, text => to text/ texting,....
III. Time: 45 minutes
IV. Teaching aids:
- Pictures, cassette, tape/ CD, board , textbook and notebook.
V. Anticipated problems
- Problem : Students the specific information because of some new words
 - Solution : Support them some new word related to the topic today

Do a quick whole- class activity to review the past perfect learnt in Unit 9.
- Write two sentences on the board and ask students to change them into one sentence using past perfect
eg: 
+ I missed the school bus. I was annoyed.
 + The last time she went out with him was two years ago
- Show two pictures: one of people talking to each other face-to- face using verbal language, gestures, facial expressions, body languege etc, and one of people communicating with animals
- Ask students to guess the topic of this unit
- Ask them to work in pair to list down as many ideas they can bout how people communicate
- Rewrite sentences using past perfect:
+ I was annoyed, as I had missed the school bus
 + I hadn't seen him when I was a student.
- Once student have got the answer
-Work in pair to write down the ideas about how people communicate
- Review the previous unit
- Motivate students to the new lesson.
Pre listen and read
3’ 
- Ask students to open their books and look other pictures of Phuc, Mai, and Nick
- Give brainstorm questions with students as:
* What do you think Phuc and Nick are talking about on the phone? 
* Where are Mai and Phuc in first picture?
* Whats are they doing there?
* Where is nick in sencond picture? What is he doing there?
* What is it in the third picture? What does it mean?
* What is a possible connection between picture 1, 2, 3? 
- Accept all possible answer from students. Remember not to give give correction at this stage
- For a more able class and if time allows, ask students to work in pair to build a story based on pictures. Have students report their stories. Accept all versions
- Look at three pictures in page 38
- Guess and give their answer
- Help students understand the context of the conversation
- Interpret the meaning of new words from their contexts.
While listen and read

- Tell students they are going to listen to the conversation between Phuc and Nick. Play the recording. Elicit the connection between the pictures. Were their earlier guesses correct?
- Ask students practice in pair this conversation
- Listen to the conversation between Phuc and Nick
- Check their ideas with teacher’ answer
- Practice this conversation
- Listen, understand and practice conversation between Phuc and Nick about topic "My battery was flat"
Post listen and read

Task a:
Playing game: Gold Star
- Divides class into two teams
- Explains the rule of the game : Teacher have 8 words/ phrases for class. When teacher show a words/ phrases if Ss find meaning of this in the conversation. Ss go to the board quickly and stick their answer as fast as them can. If the answer is correct and fastest, this group will take one gold star. And If group have more star, group will wining team

Ask students to work of three or four and discuss the question: 
-Why couldn’t Phuc, Mai and Nick see the film together as was their plan?
- What was the proplem?
- Was it only because of Nick’a mobile phone?

-Give their answer:
They could’t see the film together because nick went to wrong cinema. They didn’t communicate clearly the name and address of the cinema beforehand. Then they were not able to contact each other because the battery of nick’s mobile phone was flat
- Interpret the meaning of new words from their contexts.
- Understand meaning of the words or phrases as: show up, never mind, oversleep, waiting for ages, get through, “My battery was flat", “Are you kidding?”, "We can try again"
- Improve the skill : reading for specific information from conversation between Nick and Phuc
 - Improve the reading strategies when dealing with gapped text exercises
- Explain why Phuc, Mai, Nick could not see the film together
- Practice talking about this issues

Task 2:
- Ask students work in pair to complete this task: match the photos about ways of communication
- After they have finished, go through each item as a whole class
- Ask students to further explain the meaning of the words/ phrases in the box, and/ or how they work. 
- Allow students to use vietnamese if necessary
Task 3:
- Draw students' attention to the words/ phrases from the word box in 2 again
- Tell them to do this task by first underlining the cues in each item. Also remind students to consider the part of speech of the missing words( where applicable)
- Explain the Look out! box.
