Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: -Distinguish the clusters /str/, /skr/, /skw/ in a word and a sentence. -Pronounce the words and sentences containing the sounds correctly. -Make relative clauses without relative pronouns II. Timing: 45’ III. Techniques: Individual, pair, group work, question & answer,.. IV. Lexical Items & Structures: the clusters /str/, /skr/, /skw/ , relative clauses V. Teaching Aids: chalk, black board, textbook, pictures VI. Procedures: Stages Teachers’ Activities Students’ Activities Warm up (5’) Game: Slap the board - Divide class into 4 groups - There are 8 words on the board - Each group will send 1 member to the board and use the slapper to slap on the suitable word describing the picture shown by teacher. The group has the fastest slap has read aloud that word before they get point - Show 5 pictures one by one - Check points - Ask student to read aloud all the words 1.crash 2.street 3.square 4.ice cream 5.strong 6.squirrel 7.squash 8.strawberry -Give feedback - Work in groups. - Listen to the teacher - Look at the pictures then try to slap the right words. Give the answer. Take notes Pronunciation (10’) Activity 1: Practice reading the words ( Textbook/ p.144) - Introduce the sounds /str/, /skr/ & /skw/ - Help students in pronunciation. Pair work Activity 2: Practice reading the sentences - Read the sentences for students - Ask students to repeat and practise these sentences in pairs - Go around and correct students’ pronunciation - Call some pairs read the sentences aloud Listen and repeat the words in chorus and individuals - Practice pronouncing the sentences on page 144 in pairs Grammar (30’) Omission of relative pronouns I/ Presentation Show student a picture Ask “Do you know who are they?” Introduce they are Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck Tell them a story about them The story: “ One day, when they are staying at Mickey’s house, Mickey suddenly asks Donald: Who is Daisy?” (Show the picture of Daisy ). Donald smiles and says: She is the girl I’m looking for. She is the girl I love. She is the girl who has the most generous heart.” - Show 3 sentences (stick 3 word cards) on the board - Ask students to look at 3 sentences - With first picture, ask students “ Which is the structure of this sentence?” - Tell them the full sentence “She is the girl whom I’m looking for.” And the relative pronoun “whom” is omitted - Give another example with the second sentence “She is whom the girl I love.” - With the last sentence, ask students “ Can we omit the relative pronoun “who” here?” - Listen and give feedback - Explain the answer. - Introduce the rule II/ Rule for omitting Relative pronoun Stick word card with the rule on the board who/whom S + V+ which +S+V+( of/in/to) that *NOTES: We can omit the relative pronoun as an object in a restrictive relative clause and prepositions stand at the end of the relative clauses The pronoun can be omitted if it is not the subject of the relative clause (stick word card) III/ Practice Exercise 1: Ticking Tick the sentences in which the relative pronoun can be omitted. 0. Are these the keys that you are looking for? 1/The girl who we are going to see is from Britain 2/ He works for a company that makes cars 3/ What was the name of the man who you met yesterday? 4/ The table that was broken has now been repaired 5/ Do you know the girl who he is talking to? 6/ This is the novel that I’ve been expecting - Give students “tick and cross” - Ask students to do exercise 1 individually in 2 minutes - Ask students to tick the sentences in which the relative pronoun can be omitted and quote the reason if necessary - Ask students to give the answers by rising their “tick” if the sentences in which the relative pronoun can be omitted, and raise a cross if it cannot - Check and explain the reason Exercise 2: Sentence completion (p.145) Complete each of the following sentences ,using suitable sentence in the box to make a relative sentence with a preposition - Ask students to work in pairs to do exercise 2 on page 145 - Observe and give help if necessary - Call students to give the answer - Check and give feedback IV/ Production - Give students handouts - Ask them to do exercise 3 - Call on some students to write their answers on the board - Correct the answers * Exercise 1 Combine the two sentences into one, using the relative clauses.
