- Have ss open their books and read the text in silence.
- Check and add some more information about M.Curie and answer the above questions.

2/ Activity 2: Matching (Individuals)
- Have ss reread the text quickly and collect the sentences containing the words or phrases in column A.(Task 1/ p.33)
- T guides ss how to guess the meaning of the words/phrases through the context.
- Ss match the words/phrases in A with their meanings in B.

* Lead-in:
T: Where can we get information of one famous person?
Ss: in books, magazines, newspapers, from an interview 
T: Today we’re going to learn sth about how to conduct an interview about sb’s background.
I/ Pre-speaking:
1/ Describing the picture (p.35)
T : What do you see in the picture ?
Ss: Students – in class – talking.
T : What are they doing?
Ss : interviewing.
T : How do you know they are conducting an interview?
Ss : They’re holding pad of paper, pens in hand – taking notes.
2/ Task 1 (p.34): (pairwork)
T: When you interview sb about his/her background,what items do you want to mention?
* Key: family,hobby,dislikes, education,experience.
Language function:
(T: Which expressions do you use to conduct an interview?)
T gives some expressions on how to conduct an interview:
- Hi / Hello.

II/ While-speaking:
Task 2 (p.35)
- Ss practise speaking in group first to discuss the questions for the given cues.

Each student talks about his/her friend’s background that he/she has just interviewed.

 A student plays the role of a certain famous person that he/she knows well. The whole class ask him/her questions.

 S3: Where are you from?
Homework: Write a short paragraph about your background.
Period 14: Umit 3: LISTENING

Aim: To help ss listen to an interview and get some information about Sally, an Olympic champion.
Aids: Textbook and pictures.
 PROCEDURE
I/Warmer:Brainstorming.
 Name some athletics you know.

* Lead-in:
 Today we’re going to listen to an interview between Bob, a journalist and Sally, a running athlete. Bob wants to know sth about her background.
II/ Pre-listening:
1.Vocabulary:
- gymnast(n): (picture): van dong vien the duc.
- diploma(n): (realia / explanation): van bang (cap sau 1 cap hoc)
[ T: You have just finished secondary school.So you have a diploma, a secondary school diploma.]
 T explains ss some other words to compare:
 - degree(n): van bang (do truong Dai hoc cap).
 -certificate(n): giay chung nhan.
- romantic(adj): (translation) : lãng mạn

2.Activity 1:Describing the picture (p.36)
T asks some questions:
 - What’s her name ? ( Nellie Kim)
 - What’s her job ? ( an Olympic gymnast)
 - What does she look like ? ( fit – strong – nice)
 - How many times has she gone the Olympic champion? (5 times)
T asks the question in the book:
 - Can you name any Olympic champions? What kind of sports does he/she take up?
 - What would you like to know about these people?
T gives some more information about Olympic Games.
3. Activity 2: Listen and repeat:

III/ While-listening:
1. Task 1: T/F statements:
-Ss read the sentences in task 1 carefully before listening to the tape twice.
-Ss decide whether the statements are T/F after listening.
-Ss compare with their partners.
-Ss listen to the tape one more time, T stops the tape right after the correct answers so that ss can follow more easily.
-T checks the answers in front of class.

2. Task 2: Gap-filling:
- Ss read the sentences in task 2 and guess the words.
- Ss listen to the tape the first time.

- Ss listen the third time, T stops the tape right after the correct answers so that ss can get right information.

- Ss read Mr Brown’s C.V.
- Ss write a paragraph about Mr Brown. [T reminds ss of the tenses(simple present/simple past)]
- T models the first sentence with the cue “be born”:
 Mr Brown was born on Nov 12th, 1969 in Boston.
- Each group sticks the paper on the bb.
- T and ss correct.
* Key: 
 Mr Brown was born on Nov 12th, 1969 in Boston. He went to Kensington High school and passed exams in English, French and Mathematics. He worked in a travel agency from June 1991 to December 1998.And from 1999 to 2002, he worked as a hotel telephonist. He likes music and dancing.
2.Task 2(p.38): (Pairwork)
- T models with a student:

 - To review the past perfect tense and know the differences between the past perfect tense and the simple past tense.

 PROCEDURE
I/ Warmer: Odd one out.
 Find the word that has the different pronunciation with the others and circle it.

* Lead-in: Today we’re going to learn how the two sounds / / & / / are pronounced.
II/ Pronunciation:
1.Activity 1:
- T reads the words in the book, ss listen and pay attention to the differences when pronouncing these 2 sounds.
- T explains and ss take notes.
Notes:
 / / : first pronounce the sound /I/ then open your mouth a little more.
 / / : first pronounce the sound /e/ then open your mouth a little more.
- T reads the words on p.38, ss repeat after the T.
- Ss practise pronouncing the words several times.
- Make sure ss are aware of the difference between the two sounds.
2.Activity 2:
-T reads the sentences, ss listen and circle all the vowels pronounced as / /.

- T reads the sentence by sentence – ss repeat (pay attention to sentence stress).
- T calls some ss to read out the sentences (one student – one sentence).

II/ Grammar:
1.Revision: The past perfect tense and the simple past tense.
* Lead-in: T asks questions:
 - What was Marie Curie given at the Sorbornne? ( the position of her husband)
 - When? ( after her husband’s death)
 - Who obtained that position before that? ( her husband)
 So:(T writes on the bb):
 M.Curie took up the position which her husband had obtained at the Sorbonne.

 What tense is used here?
