 Ron Hurst is a builder. Last October he was working on the roof of an old house. He finished the job and climbed down the roof. The roof was wet and he slipped. His foot hit the ladder and kicked it away from the house. The ladder fell. It fell into the long grass in the garden.
 Ron sat down on the roof. He could see a lot of people in the main road. A girl was walking along the road, and looked up at the house. Ron stood up, shouted, and waved to her. She turned away and walked quickly down the street. Then he saw some children. He waved and shouted. They turned round, smiled, and waved back to him. Then they walked away. Ron wave and shouted for an hour. Most people smiled and waved back to him. Then it began to rain. Ron was cold and wet. He was tired too.
 At last Ron had an idea. He stood up, and moved to the edge of the roof. He shouted:
 “I’m going to jump! I can’t go on! I’m going to kill myself!”
 Ten minutes later there was a fire-engine, a police car, and an ambulance outside the house. A fireman climbed up the ladder on the fire-engine.
 “Don’t jump, young man,” he said. “Don’t jump. Everything is going to be all right!”
