UNIT THREE – PRACTICE TEST 1 (August 11th, 2016) I. Read and answer the questions. Marie Curie was born in Warsaw on November 7th, 1867. She received general education in local schools and some scientific training from her father. As a brilliant and mature student, Marie harboured the dream of a scientific career, which was impossible for a woman at that time. To save money for a study tour abroad, she had to work as a private tutor, and her studies were interrupted. Finally in 1891, Marie, with very little money to live on, went to Paris to realise her dream at the Sorbonne. In spite of her difficult living conditions, she worked extremely hard. She earned a degree in Physics with flying colours, and went on to take another degree in Mathematics. She met Pierre Curie in the School of Physics in 1894 and a year later they got married. From then on, they worked together on their research. In 1903, Marie became the first woman to receive a PhD from the Sorbonne. After the tragic death of Pierre Curie in 1906, she took up the position which her husband had obtained at the Sorbonne. Thus, she was the first woman in France to be a university professor. Soon after, she was awarded a Nobel Prize in Chemistry for determining the atomic weight of radium. But her real joy was “easing human suffering”. The founding of the Radium Institute in 1914 made her humanitarian wish come true. 1. Where did Marie Curie come from? 2. Where did she receive her education when she was young? 3. Everyone has heard of Bill Gates, one of the richest and most successful people in the world. Microsoft, the business he started with a friend in 1975, has become the world's largest computer software company, and Gates becomes the world's youngest billionaire at the age of 31. His full name is William Henry Gates III, and he was born on 28th , October 1955, in Seattle, USA. At school, Bill soon showed that he was very intelligent and especially good at Maths and Science. His parents decided to send him Lakeside, the private school where he began to use computers. 13-year-old Bill and his school friend Paul Allen were soon spending all their time writing programs and learning about computers instead of doing their school work. After finishing school in 1973, Bill went to Harvard, America's most famous university. The next year, he and Paul Allen wrote an operating program for the Altair, one of the world's first microcomputers. The two friends started Microsoft in 1975, and Gates left Harvard. Before long, Microsoft was a major busines success. Since then, the company has continued to grow, producing most of the world's leading PC software. One reason for his success is that Gates has always been very ambitious and hard-working. This has not left him much time for a normal personal life, but in 1994 he married Melinda French, a Microsoft employee, and in 1995 he wrote a bestselling book, The Road Ahead. Bill has mixed feelings about spending so much time running Microsoft "There are a lot of experiences I haven't had, but I do like my job," he says. When he does find time to relax, he likes puzzles, golf and reading about science. For such a rich man, his life is simple, and he spends little on himself and his family. When it comes to helping people, though, Gates is very generous. He has already given huge amounts of money to charity, and says that he plans to give away almost all of his wealth when he retires. 1. Who is Bill Gates? 2. What did he and Paul Allen do together? 3. Why has Gates been so successful? 4. What does he do in his free time? 5. What does he plan to do with all his money?
