As many as one thousand years ago in the Southwest, the Hopi and Zuni Indians of North America
were building with adobe-sun-baked brick plastered with mud. Their homes looked remarkably like
modern apartment houses. Some were four stories high and contained quarters for perhaps a thousand
people, along with storerooms for grain and other goods. These buildings were usually put up against cliffs,
both to make construction easier and for defense against enemies. They were really villages in themselves,
as later Spanish explorers must have realized since they called them “pueblos”, which is Spanish for towns.
The people of the pueblos raised what are called “the three sisters”- corn, beans, and squash. They made

excellent pottery and wove marvelous baskets, some so fine that they could hold water. The Southwest has
always been a dry country, where water is scarce. The Hopi and Zuni brought water from streams to their
fields and gardens through irrigation ditches. Water was so important that it played a major role in their
religion. They developed elaborate ceremonies and religious rituals to bring rain. The way of life of less –
settled groups was simpler and more strongly influenced by nature. Small tribes such as the Shoshone and
Ute wandered the dry and mountainous lands between the Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. They
gathered seeds and hunted small animals such as rabbits and snakes. In the Far North the ancestors of
today’s Inuit hunted seals, walruses, and the great whales. They lived right on the frozen seas in shelters
called igloos built of blocks of packed snow. When summer came, they fished for salmon and hunted the
lordly caribou. The Cheyenne, Pawnee and Sioux tribes, known as the Plains Indians, lived on the
grasslands between the Rocky Mountains and the Mississippi River. They hunted bison, commonly called
the buffalo. Its meat was the chief food of these tribes, and its hide was used to make their clothing and the
covering of their tents and tips.

CARNIVOROUS PLANTS
All plants rely on nutrients taken from the soil in order to survive. However, in areas where the soil does
not contain enough (45)___________ nutrients, some plants have adapted to (46)____________ their diets from
another source: living organisms. Though they are few in number, carnivorous plants are (47)___________

species of carnivorous plants in the world today, some are more (48)___________ than others.
The most well-known of these plants are the snap traps, which include the Venus flytrap. Snap traps are

brushes against the hairs, it triggers a closing mechanism that rapidly brings the two lobes together, trapping
the prey (50)___________ inside. The response of the traps is phenomenal (51)___________ speed: the time between
triggering the hairs and snapping shut is less than a second. As the prey struggles inside the trap, it only triggers
more hairs, causing the leaves to tighten their (52)___________. The plant then secrets liquid chemicals from
special glands into the trap to dissolve the prey and absorb all of its nutrients. Besides the Venus flytrap, only
one other type of snap trap exists today, (53)___________ to as the waterwheel plant. The two share a common
ancestor and differ only in a few ways. For instance, the waterwheel is an aquatic plant, while the flytrap is

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions.
Probably the most famous film commenting on the twentieth-century technology is Modern Times,
made in 1936. Charlie Chaplin was motivated to make the film by a reporter who, while interviewing him,
happened to describe the working conditions in industrial Detroit. Chaplin was told that healthy young
farm boys were lured to the city to work on automotive assembly lines. Within four or five years, these
young men’s health was destroyed by the stress of work in the factories. The film opens with a shot of a
mass of sheep making their way down a crowded ramp. Abruptly, the film shifts to a scene of factory
workers jostling one another on their way to a factory. However, the rather bitter note of criticism in the
implied comparison is not sustained. It is replaced by a gentle note of satire. Chaplin prefers to entertain
rather than lecture. Scenes of factory interiors account for only about one-third of Modern Times, but they
contain some of the most pointed social commentary as well as the most comic situations. No one who has
seen the film can ever forget Chaplin vainly trying to keep pace with the fast-moving conveyor belt, almost
losing his mind in the process. Another popular scene involves an automatic feeding machine brought to
the assembly line so that workers need not interrupt their labor to eat. The feeding machine malfunctions,
hurling food at Chaplin, who is strapped in his position on the assembly line and cannot escape. This serves
to illustrate people’s utter helplessness in the face of machines that are meant to serve their basic needs.
Clearly, Modern Times has its faults, but it remains the best film treating technology within a social context.
It does not offer a radical social message, but it does accurately reflect the sentiment of many who feel they
are victims of an over-mechanized world.
