The United Nations International Children’s Fund (or UNICEF) was founded in 1946 to provide emergency food and healthcare to children in countries that had been devastated by World War II. Headquartered in New York City, it provides long-term humanitarian and assistance to children and mothers in developing countries. UNICEF is currently focused on such problems as basic education and gender equality, child protection from violence, exploitation and abuse and HIV/AIDS. Its child protection programs also target children who are vulnerable to these abuses when living without parental. These children are at risk of death, poor physical and mental health, HIV/ AIDS infection, educational problems and poor parenting skills later in life
