In 1945, a new type of plane engines was invented. It was much lighter and more powerful than earlier engines, and enabled war planes to fly faster and higher than ever. This type of engines was called jet engine because it blows a large jet of hot air backwards at high speed.
The first airliner to use the new jet engines was built in Britain and it began carrying passengers in 1952. It had two jet engines and flew much higher than petrol-engined airliners. At this height, the air is thinner and very cold, and the aeroplane cut through the air more easily. There are no clouds to disturb the flight of the airliner, and rain and thunderstorms are far below it. The sky above is a brilliant blue.
However, because the air is so cold and thin, the cabin has to be air-conditioned and has to be at normal pressure so that the passengers may eat, read and sleep in comfort.
Today, all long distance airliners have jet engines. The modern jet airliners are even bigger, they can carry 350 passengers on two different floors. In this way, air travel can be made much cheaper.
Tomorrow’s airliners will be flying at over twice the speed of today’s airliners. In fact, a new-type airliner has already reached this enormous speed. It can carry passengers in safety and comfort far up the blue sky.

We can protect the environment and save natural resources in many ways. According to Friends of the Earth, an environmental organization, a series of activities should be supported. It is easy to remember these activities: all the three words begin with the letter “R”: reduce, reuse and recycle.
Reduce means making something smaller in size, number, extent, degree, or intensity. We can reduce garbage, pollution, etc. It also means not buying products which are over-packaged. For example, we shouldn’t buy shirts, socks which have plastic or paper packing.
Reuse means not throwing away but using something again. We can reuse envelopes, cloth bags, glass, plastic bottles, etc.
Recycle means treating things that have already been used so that they can be used again. It also means saving or collecting used or waste material for reprocessing into something useful.
