 Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam is a famous historical and cultural site in Hanoi. Originally built in 1070 in Ly dynasty, Van Mieu was representative of Confucian ways of thought and behavior. Six years later, Quoc Tu Giam, the first university of Vietnam, was established on the grounds of Van Mieu. Between 1076 and 1779, Quoc Tu Giam educated thousands of talented men for the country. In 1482, Van Mieu became a place to memorialize the most brilliant scholars of the nation. The names, places of birth and achievements of top students in royal examinations were engraved on the stone stelae. These stelae, carried on the backs of giant tortoises, are still standing today and they attract great interest from visitors.

Man is only just beginning to realize how much he must look to the sea. It can be an important source of food for millions of the world. When we know how much and in what way the oceans influence the weather, we can plan the growing of crops and even work out the best time to take our holidays. But when we get to the bottom of the sea, we find things that no one dreamt existed until recently. Lands which were covered with water when the ice melted at the end of the Ice Age are rich in minerals. Off the South African coasts, for example, is a place where there are five times the number of diamonds as in the mines on the land.
Oil is brought from the bottom of the Caspian sea. Sand with gold in it has been found off Thailand and Indonesia. But if man wants to continue gathering riches from the sea, he is going to have to look after it .
