MOUNT EVEREST
Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world, is on the frontier between Nepal and Tibet. Since very few people used to travel to this part of the world, Mount Everest wasn’t discovered until about 1850. In 1858, Mount Everest was named after Sir George Everest, the Surveyor General in India. Part of a mountain range known as the Himalayas, Mount Everest is higher than any other mountains. It is almost nine thousand metres high. The first people to conquer Mount Everest were Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. The expedition was led by Colonel John Hunt. After struggling for ten days against the bitter cold, Hillary and Tenzing finally stood on the summit on May 29, 1953.

Nobody knows exactly how many people speak it as a foreign language. There are more and more people who learn English today. As a mother tongue, it ranks only second to Chinese, which is little used outside China. Chinese is the only language with more speakers than English. This is because of the huge population of China, more than 1.2 billion people. In many countries, the textbooks in universities are in English. Many universities classes are taught in English although their first language is not English.
