Mark Twain was the pen name of Samuel Longhorn Clemens who was one of the greatest American writers. Born in Missouri in 1835, he grew up on the banks of the Mississippi River. Mark Twain’s life as a writer started during the Civil War. At that time, he was working as a newspaperman in Nevada and California. His short story The Celebrated Jumped Frog of Calaveras County was, an immediate success and his new career began. 
In 1870, Mark Twain married Olivia Langedon who had great influence on Twain’s books. He had fallen in love with her pictures even before he met her. Mark Twain was also a very successful lecturer. He travelled around the country giving talks on a variety of subjects and this also made him famous and increased the sale of his books.
